The first driver licences were issued in Manitoba in 1912. The Driver Testing Program, administered by the Motor Vehicle Branch, started in 1950. The Classified Driver Licencing System came into effect on April 1, 1975. "Conversion" applications were accepted for the various classes of professional licences from persons who formerly held chauffeur licences until September 1, 1978. Thereafter, all drivers applying for any of the professional classes of licence have been required to undergo the tests applicable to each class of licence.
