Wilfred and Mary Barnfield

Wilfred Thomas Barnfield was born in England in 1868. He came to Canada first in 1881 at the age of 13. He worked on farms in Ontario for approximately seven years then returned to England to visit his mother. He stayed only a short time and returned to Canada. In 1892 he married Mary Evelyn Jackson (1869-1953), who was born in Listowel, Ontario. In 1898 Mr. and Mrs. Barnfield came to Killarney, MB where Mr. Barnfield rented a farm and also worked as a CP Railway section man.
In 1901, Mr. Barnfield came to the Swan River Valley and filed on a homestead, the N.E. quarters of 2-34-28 in the Ruby District, south of Kenville. During the winter Mr. Barnfield worked in a lumber camp and Mrs. Barnfield cooked for the men at Sarah Lake Mill.

In 1904 they sold the homestead and moved to within a few miles of the town of Kenville, where they bought the N.E. quarter of 15-35-28. During the years 1913-1918, Mr. Barnfield worked as a elevator agent at various places including Ochre River, Ashville and Arran, Saskatchewan. Mr. Barnfield was a victim of the 1918 flu epidemic and passed away the age of forty-nine years. Mrs. Barnfield was very active in church and community affairs. She passed away in April 1953.

Living in Ontario the Barnfields had two boys, Clarence Irwin, who died in infancy and Clifford Thomas, who came to the valley with them. A daughter Vera Annetta (Mrs. T. L. Dickson) was born after the arrival in their Valley.

Clifford Thomas Barnfield (1897-1981) married Ethel Gertrude Mayer (1908-1993) daughter of James & Myrtle (Loat) Mayer. Clifford took over the family farm after returning from the first war, he and Ethel farmed there ( NE 15-35-28) until retiring to Kenville in 1962 - moving to Swan River in 1972. The Barnfields had two daughters, Verna married Earl Lough of Winnipeg and had four children. Gary, Brent, Darell and Colleen. Gary married Lisa Lavalle and has two children. Colleen married Craig Smith and has a son. The youngest daughter Norma, married William Majestki and had two daughters, Karen and Diane. Karen is married to Richard Klause of Flin Flon and they have two daughters.
